Yanina lost her mother to cancer at 9 (like it happened to another Belgian player--Justine Henin) and decided to focus on tennis instead of taekwondo as a distraction. She got initial tennis education in the US but returned to Belgium at 12 declining an invitation to the Bollettieri Academy. Awarded as Most Improved Player in 2009 when she captured Estoril and Linz titles followed by Auckland 2010 title. In 2009 she was semifinalist at US Open.
